As of 2023, Türkiye generates about 10% of its electricity through
wind power. This takes place through a number of vast wind farms built
throughout the country, most notably the Aliağa Farm in the
Izmir province, Bahçe wind farm in the
Osmaniye province, Şamlı wind farm in Balıkesir, and Soma farm in the Manisa province, the country’s largest wind farm
till date. The number of wind turbines in each farm varies between 20 and 200
turbines in a single wind farm.
Wind energy is gradually growing to occupy a higher energy
production share with plans to build over 20 more wind farms in the next 10
years including offshore plants in the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea. In
2022, a total capacity of over 5GW of wind power was installed and commissioned
in Türkiye. The Turkish government continues to reap the environmental and financial
benefits of building and running wind farms versus traditional coal plants
which both damage the environment and rely on imported coal.
With plans to build more wind farms across the
country, wind turbine factories are being established with the newest one
completed in Izmir in 2020. Izmir is still the main province for large
producers of wind turbine parts like towers, blades, and motor components.
These manufacturers include companies like Siemens-Gamesa, Nordex, and GE.
Nearly half the components for wind turbines are imported. Plans
have been made to make the supply chain rely in most on local providers in the
next few years and to increase exports for wind turbines and their parts mostly
to European countries. 75% of wind turbine factories in Türkiye export their
products internationally making Türkiye the 5th largest exporter of wind
turbine components in Europe.
There is a lucrative opportunity to import wind turbine components
from Türkiye as the above mentioned manufacturers and others are investing significantly
in research and development to enhance the quality and performance of Turkish
produced wind turbine components.
The Middle East and North African regions that have large plans
for renewable energy production making them vital markets for wind and all
other renewable energy technologies developed in Türkiye. This is an
opportunity to benefit from the skilled labor force and government plans and
incentives for increasing renewable energy technology exports. Turkish wind
turbine manufacturers are being awarded wind farm projects in East Africa by
the UN.
